Oberammergau Note:
Our tour leader, Pastor Paul Johns, layed the groundwork for our adventure to the Luther Lands and the Oberammergau Passion Play well in advance of our trip. He began by recommending the book "Here I Stand," the story of Martin Luther by Roland Bainton.
Those who read the book gained a better understanding of Luther, his days as a monk and the events that drove him to become the dynamic force behind the Reformation. In additon to reading the book, participants had the advantage of three seminars that were presented by Pastor Johns to further prepare us for the historical locations we would be visiting. As we traveled, Pastor Johns gave his perspecitve at the end of each day, enhancing the group's understanding of what we had seen.
Viking Travel is grateful for the knowledge and enthusiasm of Pastor Johns on this tour, which resulted in a very successful and enjoyable experience for all.
A final note --
The trip ended successfully yesterday at the Munich airport with much hugging, etc. The group was absolutely fabulous - everyone got along perfectly. We had the best guide, who exceeded our expectations. I think he really got somewhat attached to us too.
In fact, the guide was one of the best ones to always keep up. His vesper service at the Augustinian monestary was great, and when we got to the Coburg Fortress, the guide got us into the Luther Chapel, which was ordinarily closed. The guide led us in, closed the door and Paul said, "If we're ever going to sing 'A Mighty Fortress,' this is the time." So we did. I think everyone really was impressed with the itinerary.
